Borobudur is the largest Buddhist temple on earth and one of the greatest architectural achievements in human history. Built around 800 AD on the island of Java in Indonesia, the temple rises in nine stacked platforms — six square, three circular — representing the Buddhist cosmological universe in stone. At its summit, 72 hollow stupas each containing a Buddha statue face outward to the horizon. The entire structure, seen from above, is a perfect three-dimensional mandala.

Walk the pilgrim's path from base to summit and you trace the journey from the world of desire, through the world of form, and finally into the formless realm of nirvana.
