Ħaġar Qim — pronounced "Ajar Eem" — is one of the oldest freestanding stone structures on earth, built on the southern cliffs of Malta around 3600 BC. It predates Stonehenge by over a thousand years. It predates the Egyptian pyramids. And it sits on a tiny island in the middle of the Mediterranean that most people couldn't find on a map, which makes the whole thing considerably more mysterious.

The temple is precisely aligned with the summer solstice sunrise. On that one morning each year, the first light of the sun passes through a specially constructed hole in the temple wall and illuminates the inner sanctum in a beam of gold. The people who built this — whoever they were — understood astronomy, geometry, and sacred architecture at a level we are still struggling to fully explain.
