The battle was over. The dead were being counted. Somewhere between thirty and fifty thousand men lay on the field of Waterloo.

Wellington sat down to write.

The Waterloo Dispatch — his official report to Lord Bathurst, Secretary of State for War — was written through the night of June 18th 1815 by candlelight, in a village called Waterloo, while the man who wrote it was still processing what had happened. He had wept. He had said he didn't know what it was like to lose a battle, but nothing could be so melancholy as winning one like this.

And yet he wrote with characteristic precision, clarity and — at the very end — something rare from Wellington. Something approaching warmth.

"Bonaparte having collected his army.... it gives me the greatest satisfaction to assure your Lordship that it never was my good fortune to be in sight of so fine a body of troops."

Not a victory speech. Not a boast. Just a soldier, writing by candlelight, making sure that the men who had stood on that ridge all day were acknowledged by the one person whose acknowledgement would last — the historical record itself.

This design honours that document with the gravity it deserves — aged parchment scroll bearing Wellington's own words, crossed swords above, magnificent gold laurel wreaths on either side, crimson wax seal below, deep navy and gold badge border. Wellington's Waterloo Dispatch. June 18th 1815.

The most historically significant and artistically refined piece in the Blood, Oak & Glory collection. A design for the serious collector, the dedicated historian, and anyone who understands that the most important thing Wellington ever wrote was not a battle order — it was a letter telling the world how extraordinary his soldiers had been.

For Wellington scholars, Napoleonic Wars historians, serious military collectors, Waterloo battlefield visitors, document and archive enthusiasts, and anyone who believes the most powerful tribute a commander ever paid his soldiers was written quietly, by candlelight, the night after the greatest battle in British history.
