When France occupied Hanover in 1803 and dissolved the Hanoverian army, its officers and men faced a choice — accept French rule or find another way to fight. Thousands of them crossed the North Sea to Britain, formed the King's German Legion, and spent the next twelve years fighting in every major British campaign — Egypt, the Peninsula, Waterloo — with a distinction that made them the most respected foreign formation in British military history.

Wellington, a man not given to easy praise, called them simply "the finest troops I ever saw."

At Waterloo they were at the centre of the fighting for the entire day — holding the ridge, defending the farms of La Haye Sainte and Hougoumont, charging with the cavalry, standing in the squares. When the battle was over and the butcher's bill was counted, the King's German Legion had paid in full.
