The guns had finally stopped.

Somewhere between ten and eleven o'clock on the night of June 18th 1815, Wellington rode south across the battlefield he had just won. The ground was carpeted with the dead of three nations. Fires still burned on the horizon. The air smelled of gunpowder and rain. He had been in the saddle since before dawn.

Coming the other way, riding north through the darkness with his pursuing cavalry, was Field Marshal Blücher. Seventy-two years old. Twice unhorsed in two days. He had promised he would come, and he had come, and together they had ended something that had terrified Europe for twenty years.
